Switzerland is a country known, among other things, for its wonderfully diverse nature. Known for its popular destination for skiers and lovers of challenging alpine routes. But can we also find magical spring-colored places here? Most Certainly yes! Near the Italian border in the canton of Ticino, the historical and charming city of Locarno lies on the shores of clear Lake Maggiore!
GOOD TO KNOW: Locarno is a popular and attractive city in Ticino, which is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland. The visitors can see immediately a huge influence from the Italian architecture, lifestyle, and cuisine. Locarno Film Festival is the most famous event every August, an open-air cinema in the Piazza Grande.
TOP THINGS WHAT TO DO in and around LOCARNO
- Discover the OLD TOWN with the Piazza Grande, the Visconteo castle from 12th century, and walk around romantic small streets.
- LAKE MAGGIORE – You can walk around, use a boat trip or relax on the beach.
- CARDADA CIMETTA – Take a cable car and enjoy the impressive panoramic view from 1 671m above sea level!
- MADONNA del SASSO – (Our Lady of the Rock) –is the beautifully renovated monastery which was built in the 15th century and is still a well-known pilgrimage place.
- FALCONERIA Locarno – is a special park where you can observe and photograph beautiful birds like owls and eagles.
- The CAMELLIA PARK – is also part of the gardens of Switzerland network – a place especially for” flowers lovers” is not only for visit but also relaxing place with the more than 800 different camellia varieties.
- ASCONA – Only 5 min by car you can discover a small historical town with stylish promenade, less traffic, a nice small beach and for golf lovers also nice Golf Course! And since 1985, every week of June, is organized the original and popular Jazz Ascona festival with many concerts.
MY TIP – the BRISSAGO Islands – take a nice short trip by boat and you can admire a special botanic park with a special collection of exotic subtropical trees and flowers! (Open- from April to November).
Drink and FOOD – some of the culinary traditions of this canton is minestrone soup, polenta, and risotto. Don’t forget to taste the red wine (Merlot) from Ticino!
The pleasant Mediterranean climate makes this southern part of Switzerland very attractive all year round, and especially in spring, when the exotic flowers and trees like a magnolias, Japanese cherry, or camellias bloom!
You can visit all year round but definitively the best and special colourful time is now, in the spring!

How vibrant! I always love cities where their parks and streetsides are filled with trees that put up colorful blooms. Locarno seems like that kind of place.
