A modern cosmopolitan city, located on the banks of the Rhine River, offers plenty of cultural, historical and gastronomical experiences! I’m talking about Strasbourg, the charming capital of Alsace and the largest city of this region. All visitors admire the romantic and compact old city. Especially the Gothic Cathedral with its unique astronomical clock and “La Petite France” which is an iconic symbol of the old city. There are also many interesting museums, galleries and parks. The European dimension gives the city a seat within the European Parliament and creates a reputable network of universities consisting of students from all over the world.
Must see unique places :
- La Petite France
- Notre-Dame Cathédrale
- The Rohan Palace Museums– arts museum and gallery
- Alsatian Museum
- Place Kleber
- Barrage Vauban
- European Parliament
GOOD TO KNOW:
The first recommendation begins near Strasbourg, the famous “ALSACE WINE ROUTE”, has surrounding fields that have been producing wine since the Roman times. We are talking about the oldest and most legendary 170km long, wine route in France! Everyone who visits the city must definitely go on this route, by bike or by car, which will take you on an unforgettable journey. I can personally recommend you visit the following beautiful and pitoresque villages: Orschwiller, Ribeauville, Kaysersberg and my favorite is Riquewihr!
A private wine tasting in a family cellar was an unforgetable experience. The ones I loved in particular were Cremant (local sparkling wine) and the tender Pinot Blanc. They are popular white wines that taste of fruity Sylvaner, dry Riesling and crisp aromatic Muscat. Did you know that 90% of all wine produced is white wine!
MY TIP: is a trip to the historic city of Colmar. A small and romantic city (only 70km from Strasbourg) with the river Lauch that is also known as the center of this “wine region”. Colmar is a compact old medieval town with half-timbered houses and a canal ride that is very impressive where you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. More interesting places could include- Little Venice, the Koifhus (former customs house), the Fishmonger’s district, local market and St. Martin church.
A few words about the FOOD and DRINKS –
The historically distinctive past, when Germany and France alternated over the dominance of this strategic and fertile place around the Rhine River, gave rise not only to excellent wine, but also to beer. All local dishes are a mix of the best traditional recipes. Everyone should try Flammenkueche – Tarte Flambe (a kind of Alsatian pizza) or Choucroute Garnie (sauerkraut with sausage) and Baeckeoffe – a Hot Casserole (a variation of potatoes with vegetables and meat). The declared (spring) delicacy is white Asparagus, served as a main course with local ham and potatoes. An excellent small snack is a Bretzel (Pretzel), whether classic or filled with cheese (I like the sweet version)! And for dessert, a sweet touch at the end – Kougelhopf and Rhubart or Apple Tart are among the best choices.
WHEN is the best time to come?
Alsace is beautiful all year round. Of course, the colorful autumn is popular because of the harvesting season, and not only of wine! The picturesquely decorated Christmas markets are attractive and very famous, especially in Strasbourg and Colmar. I prefer the fragrant blooming spring season, when you just wander among the lush green vineyards and colorful meadows or parks. What do you think? Perhaps a good tip for your next trip?

When compared to Canada, all the buildings are so much more historic as far as age, Kamila. Looks like such an amazing region. It would be fun to bike that 170km route. 😀
