RELAX around the Lake Geneva – Switzerland

Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux – these beautiful cities grew up on the shores of the famous Lake Geneva. They are like a gem on a necklace, that tourists from all over the world admire. But what do they like the most? Everyone chooses something from the wide range of interesting history that nature has to offer going all the way back to the roman times, including the gorgeous nature where the Alps rise around the sparkling lake, cultural traditions and of course great food and drink! Bonjour – welcome in the French speaking part of Switzerland and enjoy the special mood and cultural experiences!

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Switzerland (capital Bern)- officially the Swiss Confederation is a famous small country (8.500.000 population) in Western- Central Europe – with many lakes, mountains, ski resorts!
  • The country is famous for being the watch-making capital of the world – where more than 20.000 people are employed in this fine industry. Geneva is known to be the home of famous watch brands.

Let’s starts with the second largest city in Switzerland and famous central for international diplomacy, yes, it is GENEVA. An ideal day can be started with a walk-through old town, shopping and sitting by the lake with a view of the popular water fountain. Smaller LAUSANNE is a beautiful historical city which offers a magnifique view from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and known as a home to the International Olympic Committee, and its original Olympic Museum.

MY TIP: maybe -The one-day boat trip from Lausanne – Ouchy to French Evian  and exploring the springs of this famous mineral water!

OR a stop at the vineyards? If you drive from Lausanne to Montreux, you will certainly be interested in the terraced vineyards with stone walls, which monks began to build in the 11th century – one is the LAVAUX- UNESCO area (over 800 ha) and about 14 villages, whose inhabitants have been growing wine, declared Mediterranean, for generations climate gave rise to a special variety of Chasselas. An interesting stop is certainly in the small village of Saint Saphorin, where you can walk through the vineyards and enjoy a magnificent view of the lake.

And in the end of our journey is a traditional, cute town MONTREUX – situated between the imposing peaks of the Alps and a shimmering lake – dazzles everyone with its beautiful promenade, houses with the “Belle Epoch” era, but also the most famous castle in Switzerland- Chillon was built in the 11th century and was made famous by the work of English poet Lord Byron.

The city captivated more than one celebrity who lived here – among the most famous are Charlie Chaplin and Freddie Mercury.

And if you like music – MJF – the Montreux Jazz Festival, takes place every year at the beginning of July and is known to be incredibly popular.

And what about the local cuisine? Do not forgetto try the Cheese FondueRaclette or Rösti – they are the most traditional foods.  Swiss Chocolate and Chesses are very tasty and known around the world. Local wine, beer and many types of mineral waters are unique.

It is possible to visit this part of Switzerland all year round, but for me the blooming spring or the colorful autumn is the best!
