This is how Barcelona works – like an ageless lady who is full of energy, charm and constantly offers news in the world of design, culture and culinary art. Cosmopolitan metropolis Barcelona is also the second largest city in Spain (more than 1.6mil. inhabitants) and the capital of Catalonia, with a long and interesting history, filled with even more interesting activities in the present. An advantageous location by the Mediterranean Sea, with an important harbor, a pleasant climate and beautiful beaches, make Barcelona even more attractive. That is why it is the center of trade and culture in the southern part of Europe, and tourists from all over the world love the city… Why? It’s just trendy and cool.
GOOD TO KNOW –Barcelona is known as a city of modernism. Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Antonio Gaudi and many others artist lived here and created their works of art!
INTERESTING places in Barcelona
- La Sagrada Familia – (UNESCO heritage site) iconic symbol of the city and largest unfinished Catholic church in the world! Catalan architect A. Gaudi with its original design made him famous and became immortal himself.
- La Pedrera – Casa Mila – (UNESCO heritage site) is a part of A. Gaudi work. It was built as a private residence and was controversial in this time (1912) because it was too original and had unusual facade! It is culture museum, now.
- Park Guell – (UNESCO heritage site) is Gaudi’s masterpiece! It is one of the largest green spaces in Barcelona. Park is unique combination of gardens and architectural elements located in Carmen Hill.
- Picasso Museum – is an art museum where the visitors from all over the world can admire a collection of more than 4 000 of his works of art.
- Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art – surprising and unique collection of works
- Mercado de la Boqueria – is large and popular market that sells fresh food at high quality. This place is the real” heart” of the city offering a rich variety of vegetable, fish, meat that amazes everyone.
Stadium FC Barcelona – for football lovers, this really is the kind of place you need to go…-with a current seating capacity nearing the 100 thousand and is the largest in Spain and Europe!
MY TIP – one day trip – Montserrat Monastery –is one of the most famous historical places in Catalunya. Near Barcelona where we can admire architectural treasure, whose roots date back to the 11th century, when Benedictine monks have discovered this beautiful location. The community of monks still live here and also care for a huge library with originals dating from the 14th and 15th centuries!
A FEW WORDS about FOOD and DRINKS – everyone notices the big influence of the Mediterranean cuisine that is typical on all dishes, where lovers of all kinds of dishes made from a variety of vegetables, fish and fresh seafood are sure to enjoy!
Typical dishes include, Paella Catalana (combination of seafood and vegetables), Escalivada (grilled papers, onions, eggplants), or Soups – Gazpacho during the summer and Seafood soup in winter. My personal favorite is – Tapas – is a very popular and tasty dish served like small plate with small bread and some anchovy, olives, meet balls, olives, fried squid. Now when you combine a glass of Cava with Tapas, that is when you will truly understand this magical place!
Barcelona welcomes millions of tourists from all over the world every year, who are bait for pickpockets and gangs of thieves! It’s good to be careful and not to take expensive things with. The city is otherwise beautiful all year round. April, May, October and November are a bit calmer time for visit.
