A true gem in Provence, France – LUBERON

There are many reasons why I love Provence and maybe you will agree with me!

If you like spectacular countryside with extraordinary lavender fields, orchards, vineyards, fascinating ochre hills or fabulous medieval villages… you will certainly fall in LOVE with Luberon! And in combination with tasteful local food, no doubts, you must visit it!!!

We started in GORDES (which is called “the capital of Luberon”), one of the most picturesque medieval villages

in this part of France. Not far away you can also visit mysterious SÉNANQUE Abbey that is surrounded by lovely lavender fields. And then we continued to visit a very special place called BORIES, which is an abandoned village with only dry-stone building.

ROUSSILLON is amazing and colorful village (my favorite place) where houses are built from ochre with more than 10 shades – which you can see in a stunning contrast with green trees and blue sky! Roussillon is well known for its ochre quarries with one of the most significant ochre deposits in the world.

But enough of villages, there is beautiful nature ideal for hiking around as well. One of these places is French Colorado near the village LUSTREL. You can get some of the best views on the ochre hills from here. This place is less touristic but shall not be missed.

Unfortunately we missed village MENERBES where Peter Mayle wrote successful book – A Year in Provence.

We have booked nice small hotel in typical Provence city with many plane trees.  Here we enjoyed famous local food and drinks… Pastis is an anise-flavored liqueur and apéritif from France, pink (rose) Provence wine… salad  with goat cheese, rabbit pate, roasted duck leg with fries and so many excellent cakes!

But my most unforgettable moment was when I tasted local lavender ice cream –nice color and so yummy! So, what do you think?

    An incredible story, and great photographs too… I have never even thought there was such a think as lavender ice-cream, and in addition to just wanting to visit Provence for the scenery and beauty, I now want to check out the ice-cream. Great post 🙂

    I took my husband to those same villages last summer (as I do with pretty much every friend who come in southern France for the first time!) and he truly enjoyed it! Gordes remains his favorite village; lavender and violet ice-cream flavors were new to me and I loved it too!!

    Are you there right now?
    So glad you got to enjoy such a beautiful part of my country (the best part! I’m biased, I’m from there 😉

      Olala! Dear J., you know exactly this part of Provence, great!I understand you must be proud of! And the ice cream – was original and tasteful. I was there before two weeks …fantastic time! (I live in Monaco, now.)

    It’s funny how you can become addicted to some areas. I’ve never spent time in France but I have seen lots of lovely photos (like these!). Love the wooden steps up from the beach. Looks like my kind of place 🙂
