Postcard from Saint-Émilion, France. Not only for wine “EXPERTS”!

DO YOU ENJOY DRINKING QUALITY RED WINE? Come to the Southwestern part of France! This beautiful part of the country has some interesting history as well as good food and drinks! And when we are in France, the real talk is about WINE! We only spent one day in the picturesque town of Saint-Émilion and its surroundings but it was worth it.

From the Atlantic Coast of the world known wine center of Bordeaux, where wine is cultivated since 1st century BCE , coming up with the best wines in the world, we depart early morning in the direction of Saint-Émilion, the 1st vineyard in the world listed among the world heritage UNESCO sites. (From Bordeaux, there is also a possible trip towards the Médoc, an area which is quite famous and popular but we chose S-É.)

The medieval city of Saint-Émilion is both romantic and magnificent, with its historical buildings and monuments, (The collegiate church and its cloister, The great wall, The cardinal palace) and a lot of wine-shops and restaurants. The Grand Saint-Émilion area is a famous region with rich architectural heritage from different eras and a vineyard. This area consists of a plateau, hills and a plain covered with vineyards and woods, crossed by a river…

Some interesting facts – Did you know that…?

  • Cellars are open to the public and over 100 chateaux are available to welcome you.
  • 1884 local producers established the first Syndicat Viticole in France
  • The Syndicat Viticole created two appelations: Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.
  • 5.400 hectares from which the main grape variety is MERLOT – this variety is round, generous and fruity with red and black fruit aroma…
  • Would you guess why there are colourful roses planted on the vineyards? They do look stunning, yet it is not for their beauty that they are here…they are inclined to the same diseases as grapevines! This means that if they show any sign of illness, the planter will be warned beforehand about a possible danger concerning its grapevines!

The day was fantastic and we are agreeably drowsy for sure. Nonetheless, now comes the right time for tasting some fine red wine! Cheers! IN VINO VERITAS…

Not only do I enjoy drinking quality but also quantity (for creative purposes of course…), and this looks like a perfect place for both. Another great series of photos Kamila.
